Former Polish PM Jerzy Buzek was elected the new President of the European Parliament during the Tuesday inaugural meeting of the chamber.
Buzek started his first address before the European Parliament as its president stressed that "human rights will be a priority" for him." He stressed the symbolic dimension of the election of a representative from Central and Eastern Europe: "This is how Europe changes.

Following a hard-fought campaign, the governing Civic Platform (PO)—center-right party—enjoyed an easy victory in the elections to the European Parliament on June 7, 2009. The party, led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, won 25 out of 50 seats on offer while Law and Justice (PiS)—the main opposition party came second with 15 seats.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski will arrive in Moscow on May 5 for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, PAP learnt on Wednesday from diplomatic sources in Moscow. Preparations for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin`s visit to Poland planned for early September will be the main topic of talks of the Polish and Russian foreign ministers, the sources said. Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski arrived in Moscow on Tuesday evening for a two-day working visit Sikorski will meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer said the visit is serving "the continuation of Polish-Russian relations." He added that it is a normal and desirable thing that in neighbourly relations such visits are held on regular bases and stressed they should focus on bilateral relations and international affairs.

The 31st contingent of the shift of the Polish UNIFIL military contingent, the last one to go to Lebanon, was bidden farewell in Kielce, southern Poland, on Tuesday. The 450-strong mission will supervise commodity and troop transport from Lebanon to the Naqoura base, secure provision for operational units, store commodity and repair equipment as well as will monitor the contingent responsibility area.
