Round-up of Diplomatic Activities in the Month of March 2009

March 2
Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Poland, H.E. Hazairin Pohan, attended a farewell dinner given by the Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Poland, H.E. Chandra Mohan Bhandari, in honor of the departing Ambassador H.E. Si-yung Lee of the Republic of Korea on the completion of his mandate in the Republic of Poland.


March 3
Ambassador Hazairin Pohan attended the reception on the occasion of the National Day of Bulgaria in Warsaw, at the invitation of H.E. Ambassador Ivan Najdenov.  Ambassador Pohan congratulated the Bulgarian Ambassador and the attending officials in the reception line and expressed his best wishes for the state and Bulgarian people as well as for the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.  Ambassador Pohan was posted in Bulgaria as First Secretary in 1992-1996.


March 4
Ambassador Hazairin Pohan  attended a lunch for the Heads of Missions of the Islamic Countries Organization with the participation of Mr. Mariusz Handzlik, Undersecretary of State at the Presidential Chancellery, at the invitation by the Ambassador of Egypt H.E. Fahmy Fayed at his residence in Warsaw.  It is customary among OIC Ambassadors to meet regularly with the presence of important government officials or politicians of the Republic of Poland for an exchange of views with regard to important issues for OIC member states and bilateral issues with individual Ambassadors as well.


March 5
•     Ambassador Pohan, together with the diplomatic corps in Warsaw, attended a state ceremony
      marking the official visit by President of Romania H.E. Traian Basescu at the Presidential Palace
      in Warsaw.  It is customary and good practice in Poland to provide a chance for the diplomatic
      corps at the head-of-mission level, to greet with heads of states visiting the Republic of Poland.
      H.E. President Traian Basescu paid an official visit to the Republic of Indonesia in 2004, to
      reciprocate a state visit by the then Indonesian President Madam Megawati Soekarnoputri to
      Romania in 2003.   Ambassador Pohan was a member of the Indonesia Delegation in both
      occasions, in his capacity as Director of Central and East European Department of the Ministry of
      Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

•     In the afternoon, Ambassador Pohan met with Prof. Andrzej Maslowski and Mr. Janusz Bedkowski,
      of the Mechatronics Faculty, Warsaw University of Technology, who are planning to visit Indonesia
      at the invitation by the Rector of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in Bandung for fostering
      cooperation in technology of the two institutions.


March 6-8

Ambassador Pohan, together with the diplomatic corps in Warsaw and their spouses participated in the program organized by the Diplomatic Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pay a visit to Zakopane and Poprad at the invitation of the local governments and business circle in the Province.  During the trip, all Ambassadors were briefed by the local authorities on the economic potentials of the region and held an exchange of views on all the possibilities for forging bilateral cooperation with the individual countries.  The occasion would also benefit the newly assigned foreign Ambassadors to meet with their counterparts as well as the officials of the host countries and to enjoy cultural performances, specially organized by the host.


March 10
•     Ambassador Hazairin Pohan received in his office of Mr. Piotr Gulczynski, Chairman of the Walesa
      Institute, to discuss the possibility of the visit by President Lech Walesa to the Republic of
      Indonesia in his capacity as a member of 12-Wisemen Group to meet with the religious leaders
      as well as intellectuals for an exchange of views on the religious and democratic issues and to
      give lectures to the Indonesian experts on the said issues.

•     Ambassador Hazairin Pohan on the same day attended a lecture given by H.E. Radoslaw Sikorski,
      Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, on Benefis of Democracy at Times of Global
      Crises, held on the occasion of the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Polish membership
      in NATO at the invitation of Mr. Marek Ostrowski, Chief of the International Section at “Polityka”
      Old Library of the Warsaw University.


March 11
•     Ambassador Hazairin Pohan met with the Honorable Madeleine K. Albright, Former U.S. Secretary
      of State, at the invitation to all Heads of Diplomatic Missions accredited to the Republic of Poland.
      During the brief exchange, Madam Albright praised the results of the visit to Indonesia by US State
      Secretary H.E. Hillary Clinton for further bilateral cooperation and exchange of views on important
      global issues between the two countries. Poland’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Radoslaw Sikorski, met
      with the Heads of Diplomatic Missions on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Poland’s
      accession to NATO at Przezdzieckich Palace in Warsaw.

•     In the evening, Ambassador Pohan attended the opening of a photo exhibition at the Ethnographic
      Museum in Warsaw at the invitation of the Ambassador of Mexico H.E. Raphael Steger.


March 12
Ambassador Hazairin Pohan attended a conference organized by the Permanent Secretariat of the Community for Democracies on “Challenges for World Peace and Democracy: Heritage and Vision of Professor Bronislaw Geremek” at the Old Library, Warsaw University, in Warsaw.


March 13
Ambassador Hazairin Pohan attended a Conference on “International Security. Challenges and Threats in the 21st Century” at the Academy of Economics, in Radom.  During his meeting with the Rector of the Academy, the two sides dwelled on possible performance by an Indonesian cultural group in “Indonesia Day” to be held at the Academy.


March 17
Ambassador Pohan and his wife, together with the diplomatic corps in Warsaw, attended a reception on the occasion of St. Patrick’s Day given by the Ambassador of Ireland H.E. Declan O’Donovan at Porczynskich Gallery, in Warsaw.


March 19
•     On behalf of the Indonesian Embassy and himself, Ambassador Pohan signed the condolence
      book at the Afghan Embassy on the passing away of the former President of Afghanistan
      H.E. Mohammed Daoud Khan.

•     In the afternoon, Ambassador Pohan accompanied by First Secretary M. Timoer Poerwonggo met
      with Mr. Tomasz Ostaszewicz, Director, International Bilateral Cooperation Department, Ministry of
      Economy, to discuss ways and means to conclude negotiations on the draft Agreement on Economic
      Cooperation between Indonesia and Poland.


March 23
Ambassador Pohan, together with the diplomatic corps in Warsaw, attended a state ceremony marking the official visit by President of Hungary H.E. Laszlo Solyom at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.  Former President Megawati Soekarnoputri of Indonesia paid an official visit to the Republic of Hungary in 2002. At that time, Ambassador Pohan was a member of the Indonesia Delegation in his capacity as Director of Central and East European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.


March 25
Ambassador Hazairin Pohan attended the opening session of the Egyptian Days in Krakow in the morning, and later in the evening delivered his speech at the Gamelan concert organized by Wroclaw University at the Ethnographic Museum, in Wroclaw.
